Preparing to Travel/Packaging the Underwater Equipment
Preparing to travel
After traveling to different destinations I notice that there are so many restrictions when I travel with my underwater cameras and scuba equipment. Usually I get stop for extra inspection which involves opening my bag and submitted to some test that will detect any prohibited substances like explosives for example.
Regardless you destination, security check points at the airports are becoming stricter every day. If there is any item that they are not familiar with, they may ask you to open your bags. Sometimes you may have to explain what you carry on.
Here are some tips that can help you to smooth the process.
Equipment List
I usually when I am packaging my equipment I have a check list that help me to know what I am bringing with me and what I am not. It is important to plan your trip a head, try not to bring to much but just what you need. Have a list of items with serial numbers and other specifications just in case you have any problems like losing your bags or for any damage during the trip this will help with the claiming process and with the insurance . Keep always a copy of the list with you away from the packed items.
Baggage and Carry-on
The airlines usually have limitations on baggage and carry-on. They are not responsible for any lost or damages. You may carry one bag and one personal item at no charge. All items must easily fit into the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you the carry-on most be approximately 22" x 14" x 9" and the personal item could be a purse, briefcase, camera bag, or diaper bag.
I use as carry-on Fancier photo pro bag 23”x 15”x 9” this bag fits perfectly into the overhead of the plane. This bag can carry up to 30 items of equipment including a 14” laptop. Do not attach cameras inside the housing the security will ask you to removed for inspection.
As a personal item I carry a camera bag where I pack my cameras, lens, dive computers, camera accessories. and other small items this way they are safe with me. Never pack any camera equipment on your checking suitcase sometimes the items get stolen or damage.
As you can see I comply with the airline regulations The fun part is when you get to the check points and they ask you to open your bags for inspection they usually don’t put everything back the way it was but don’t worried you will have plenty time to accommodate the items again.

Lionfish Expedition
On August 9, I will be heading to Cozumel with a group of divers. One of the main purposes of this expedition is to capture with my camera the Lionfish. I had never photographed this fish before. It is unfortunate that this magnificent fish could be lethal not only to divers but to the entire reef. According with biologists the Lionfish is an eating machine that could eat up to 185 juvenile fish per day threatening to displace native fish and lowering the population which would result in an accumulation of algae on the coral reefs and could potentially impede their grow.
The local authorities in Cozumel are taking all precautions including catching and killing the fish to prevent his reproduction.
Join me in my journey and keep visiting my blog for latest news of my expedition.
